The latest Grixly double-header takes the ongoing Longboxes saga to the next level. The anecdotes, vignettes and stories provide readers with a portrait of America with the lid off. The frame of Nate’s world of comic book back issue wheeling and dealing – the subject is America itself, as it moves through the (end?) stages of a late-capitalism that is manifesting ever more glaring symptoms throughout its body politic pointing to its being a disease in search of a cure.
Through the stories that play out here (a few playing out only in Nate’s head) it is amply demonstrated that paying attention to details and learning from your mistakes works to put things in perspective, which, in turn, provides insights that can be used to map the present and so find effective path(s) forward.Sacha Mardou’s model “diorama” reference home that makes an appearance towards the end, serves as an in situ synecdoche of this theme that is elaborated over the two issues’ (combined) densely packed 48 pages. DEAL!
