The early career of Ella Fitzgerald from the time she established herself as a celebrity of the swing era with the Chick Webb Orchestra and her early solo career which began in 1942 has been covered in Properbox 74 - Ella Fitzgerald, â??Romance and Rhythmâ?. INTROCD 2009, â??Smooth Sailingâ?, Ellaâ??s single CD in the â??Proper Introduction ofâ? series, covers Ellaâ??s career during the early 1950s, including her triumphant set at Tokyoâ??s Nichigaki Theatre in November 1953, during Jazz at the Philharmonicâ??s first tour of Japan. This set picks up the story in 1954 with some of her work with pianist Ellis Larkins and smoothly works through recordings with amongst others Sy Oliver, Buddy Bregman, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong, in sessions that included Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Buddy Rich.
