A long awaited new issue of this unclassifiable series if finally here. The first four issues were self-published by Brodowski before being collected into a trade by the fine folks at Secret Acres, who have now assumed publishing duties on the series as well. Secret Acres has put their weight behind this issue and as a result it has vastly improved production values. Brodowski's work is surreal, presenting dreamlike narratives pulsating with an elusive intuitive internal logic that while palpable, remain ever just beyond the reader's grasp. This issue features four stories, each of which confronts an often violent and/or militaristic masculinity from a particular – what can only be termed "Brodowskian" – angle.

The popular web comic, Troop 142 at last makes the leap to the printed page with the help of the intrepid small press comics publisher Secret Acres. Troop 142, as is often – but certainly not always – the case with web comics, benefits from being collected all at once under one cover, giving the reader both opportunity and impetus to read all the way through the entirety of this story about one week spent at Pinewood Forest Camp, New Jersey, with The Boy Scouts of America Troop 142. Dylan Horrocks states that it, "dig(s) deep into the dark side of teenage - and adult - masculinity to reveal the brittle, wounded humanity at its heart."

This Vermont resident (native?) has been quietly building an impressive body of hard-to-get-a-hold-of self-published works that are now, at last, herein collected in a single volume published by the fine folks at Secret Acres. A Center for Cartoon Studies alum, Lambert has developed a strong, recognizable style. He is not, however, content to play the same song over and over. Rather, he has put his chops in the service of a restless intelligence and has produced so far a nice batch of formal and thematic explorations that will reward engaged comics readers everywhere. Take a gander at his online comics work, here. 128 pages • 2-color throughout, except for 1 full-color signature. Recommended.

It seems like quite a few years have passed since we first discovered Gaylord Phoenix as a mini-comic, and now, under the auspices of Secret Acres, it has finally been collected into a 254 page graphic manifesto of unfettered self exploration. Gaylord Phoenix is clearly the work of someone who has been paying attention to what's been going happening in the artistic center of comics and has taken what he has found there and put it to his own uses, which are, roughly, to share his tortuous path to self discovery through a symbol filled psychescape that culminates in a celebration of his embrace of gay sexuality.

BACK IN PRINT! Here it is 2008's book of the year, now back in print with an new cover. This hefty 336 page tome collects all seven issues of Mr. Ellsworth's fantastic self-published series of comics of the same name, (these have been big sellers here at Copacetic, but most, if not all, of them are now out of print) PLUS well over 100 pages of new -- and amazing -- material. This is a veritable jackpot of a book, and we commend the fine folks at Secret Acres for taking the chance on Theo and publishing it. It is packed with page after page of the most energetically imaginative pen and ink drawings we've ever seen. There's a hint of Moebius here, but really, when you get right down to it, this book makes us think that Ellsworth's body, despite residing in the northwest of the USA, has been occupied by a spirit from gothic Europe; probably that of a monkish scribe who produced illuminated manuscripts that contained detailed architectural renderings... and this spirit is pushing itself into our world through Theo's skillful hands, manifesting itself here in these fantastic pages of comics, which, the more you look at them the more they really do seem to start to come alive and enter into the mind and spirit of the reader. We strongly encourage you to visit www.artcapacity.com to help prepare yourself for the experience. Theo Ellsworth's talent is clearly working at maximum capacity.

We're glad to report that, balancing out the massive outpouring of classic comics collections, there is also a healthy influx of new, small press and self-published works out this month as well, demonstrating that the riches of comics past are not crowding out the healthy spouts of new comics growth. John Brodowski's weird and wonderful – and largely wordless – self-published comics have developed a small but faithful following here at Copacetic, and we are pleased to be able to offer these no-longer-available issues in this single volume to what we hope will be a wider audience. These are comics that are extremely difficult to write about. What, exactly, is going on in these deftly pencilled pages? Well, what we can say is that the unique pleasure that the reading of this work affords is precisely the evocation of this mystery.

Ken Dahl is back and as miserable as ever in Monsters, a fraught-filled, deeply personal memoir of his "relationship" with the herpes simplex virus and how it has affected his personal life as well as his physical and psychological health. The brutal honesty on display here may make uncomfortable reading for some, while others will find it welcome. There is, however, no debating the artistic authority which Dahl brings to this project. How the events transpired; what his feelings and thoughts were as they did; how he dealt with the repercussions; the reactions of others, how he responded to them and what he felt as he did – all are conveyed clearly and effectively along with a healthy dollop of educational information about the science behind the virus, leaving the reader with a newfound appreciation for the complexities involved in navigating the physical and emotional minefield of carrying this omnipresent germ.

Looking for something to celebrate? How about this: An all new 32-page comic book by Theo Ellsworth! It's been almost a year since up-and-coming indy-comics publisher, Secret Acres unleashed the full force of his massive talent in the definitive Capacity collection that was released at last year's SPX and has been one of Copacetic's best sellers since then. In the interim, the question, "Is there anything new by Theo Ellsworth?" has become perhaps the most frequent of all queries here at Copacetic (followed closely by, "Can I use the bathroom?") Now, at last we can answer in the affirmative. Sleeper Car is firmly in the tradition of the comics that filled Capacity, and is sure to be enjoyed by all its fans. The sleeper car is now ready for boarding, aaall aboooaaarrd!

Brand-spanking new publisher, Secret Acres, brings us Wormdye, a 128-page, 6 5/8" x 9 1/2", B & W collection of Eamon Espey's self-published series of the same name (some issues of which we have had on sale here at Copacetic over the past few years). Coming on strong, like a mutant offspring of Kim Deitch, Gary Panter, Charles Burns and Rory Hayes who spent all his spare time studying ancient arts from around the world, Eamon Espey is an engaging new talent. His work gathers strength and intensity from being bundled together -- taken all at once, it packs a wallop of weirdness. Ancient eras and distant cultures freely mix with contemporary comics sensibilities producing a manic hurly burly that will provide its readers with a unique and unsettling experience.
