How's this for value: the complete 360 page graphic novel in hardcover for the same price as the 160 page Book One in softcover issued by Fantagraphics a couple years back? Not only that, but this edition completes Kim Thompson's excellent translation that he started for Book One.  Originally published in six volumes in France between 1996 and 2004, this edition represents the first time the complete story has appeared in English.  As readers of David B.'s recently released Babel already know, he is a formidable graphic stylist with a strong and sure line and a great sense of how to use blacks to create a balanced page.  Epileptic is the story of an idyllic childhood abruptly and traumatically shattered by the onset of a brother's epilepsy, followed by the ordeal that ensued and the intermittent retreats into fantasy that proved to offer respite.  A stunning achievement and clearly one of the most important texts in contemporary comics, Epileptic is, on the one hand, a moving tale of one family's painful experience of raising an epileptic child -- the brother of the author --  and, on the other, is a brilliant parable of the history of Europe, in which the author's family stands as a synecdoche for the continent as a whole, with the brother's travails representing the tribal, ethnic and national obsessions which periodically erupt into the violent seizures of war.  In crafting this work, David B. -- who was the winner of the 2005 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Artist -- created a rich and dense visual vocabulary that is truly unique and quite amazing to behold.  This attractive hardcover edition is highly recommended for the discerning comics reader, or for an adventurous reader of contemporary literature who'd like to be introduced to the pleasures of comics.  It prompted Joe Sacco (Palestine) to state that "David B. is clearly one of the best storytellers in the medium of comics," and inspired Jason Lutes (Berlin) to rave, "David B. works a real kind of deeply human magic on the page – something forged from black ink and a soul's struggle that marks Epileptic as one of the first truly great narrative artworks of the new millennium."  – ALSO AVAILABLE IN SOFTCOVER

Well, the undisputed highlight of this issue is an all-new 36-page piece by David B. (Epileptic) titled "The Armed Garden". Yes!  Along side of this is a line-up up the ususal MOME suspects: Andrice Arp, Gabrielle Bell, Jonathan Bennett, Jeffrey Brown, Martin Cendreda, David Heatley, Anders Nilsen, and Kurt Wolfgang, who is the interviewee this time around. (Concerned MOME devotees may be assured that both John Pham and Paul Hornschemeier will return in the next issue) R. Kikuo Johnson (Night Fisher) takes a bow in this issue with a series of three-panel strips featuring "Cher Shimura."  MOME is fast becoming the official "little literary magazine" of the comics world.  If you've read an issue already, you know what we're talking about; if you haven't, this is a good time to find out for yourself.  To learn more, visit our MOME page.

David B. is, for our money at least, the most accomplished contemporary European comics creator.  He is the author of Epileptic, a true graphic novel, and one of the greatest yet produced.  Nocturnal Conspiracies is, as its subtitle suggests, a compilation of dreams committed to paper; a dream diary.  Printed in black and white with a single, sparingly used, blue color overlay, the dream chronicles range from four to twelve pages in length, with the majority falling in the six to eight page range.  It bears some characteristics of being a pet project, nurtured for years until the time was ripe.  As such, it is interesting to note motifs and tropes that, evidently, initially arose in his dreams, but that found their way into not only Epileptic, but some of his historical adaptations that have been published in MOME over the past several years, as well.  That said, David B is here in full possession of his mastery of the comics medium.  The pieces are expertly paced models of concise storytelling, as well as haunting evocations of the dream state.  Here's a preview of Dream #17 (just click on the arrow to advance).

Here they are, the next three installments of that swellegant line of superior quality pamphlet comics, the "Ignatz", that is a co-production of Fantagraphics Books and Italy's Coconino Press.  The main attraction is Babel 2 which is the second installment (the first was Babel 1, published in 2004 by Drawn & Quarterly in what was the prototype for the Ignatz line) in the continuation of the epic tale begun in Epileptic.  Babel is a graphic tour de force that no comics connoisseurs will want to miss.  In the second installment of Insomnia, Broersma lightens his palette and turns in what is, in our estimation, the strongest work of his career.  Gipi continues the sombre, rain-washed tales of Italian outcasts in They Found the Car that he offered up in the first installment of "Wish You Were Here", The Innocents.  All three of these are recommended, as are all of the previous installments Ignatz line.  Do yourself a favor and check these out.
